Past the ivy wall, the road vanished under brambles. Ivo nearly turned back.
Then tiny vermilion marks appeared on his blank paper: a boot print, a wheel track, the paw of a three-toed dog. The living map was drawing a path one footprint at a time.
Ivo followed until chimney smoke rose between the alder trees.
