Nia repaired messenger machines in her father’s rooftop workshop. On the eve of the Sky Parade, her mechanical swallows still flew in circles.
“Thirty minutes?” she asked.
Her father turned the brass dial. Cyan light spilled across the roof, the sunset paused, and Nia finished every swallow before dinner.
Somewhere, tomorrow became half an hour shorter.
