She did not call the guards.
Instead, she showed them the first ledger. Forty years earlier, an earthquake had trapped thousands below the river tunnels. The newly invented engine borrowed one night of time, and rescuers reached everyone.
“This machine is not wicked,” she said. “It remembers what we ask of it.”
