The City That Borrowed Tomorrow

As if summoned by the story, alarm bells rang. A crowded sky-tram had jammed above the canal, and its emergency batteries were failing.

The mayor borrowed forty minutes. Engineers reached the tram. Every passenger climbed down safely as the last battery went dark.

Nia cheered with the whole city.

Then she looked toward Low Veyra, where tomorrow’s dawn had just lost forty more minutes.
