Seli showed him her maps. They named every doorstep and shared oven, every rain barrel and roof garden.

Years ago, a royal canal had flooded the old Northbank. The families moved themselves beyond the wall and asked to be redrawn. The council refused.

“If we appear on the city map,” Seli explained, “they owe us a bridge, wells, and a school. It is cheaper to call us empty land.”
